Many people like to quit on a day with special significance like New Year's Day or their birthday. This can be helpful because it allows you to make a clean break - saying to yourself: from this day onwards I will no longer be a smoker.
We don't have a lot of evidence to say whether picking a special day will help you or not. The main thing is that you try seriously to give up smoking and anything that spurs you on to do that is terrific. Of course if you do quit at a time when lots of people you know are stopping as well (e.g. New Year's Day or Stoptober), then you can encourage each other to stay off cigarettes, which can boost your chances of success.
