Cold turkey

Also known as: Stopping without help, stopping without support

See also: Abrupt quitting

Description

Some people succeed at stopping smoking without any support. However, the proportion of people who stop without help is much lower than those who seek professional support. Generally speaking people who smoke a lot have a hard time giving up by themselves. The cravings are too strong and they relapse. Research shows you have a better chance of succeeding if you get professional advice.

This is not the same as abrupt quitting which is actually better than cutting down gradually!

How best to use it

Unless you are very light smoker and/or someone with a huge amount of willpower, going cold turkey isn't the best way to successfully stop smoking. People often need a number of tools and techqniues to help them give up permanently.
