Abrupt quitting is when you smoke normally right up until the day you want to quit, but then cut out cigarettes completely. This is sometimes (wrongly) called 'cold turkey'.
You don't need to worry about cutting down before your quit date. Just continue to smoke normally, and then when your quit date arrives, stop smoking completely. From that moment on, not a single puff. You may even want to smoke more cigarettes just before you stop. This is called 'aversive smoking', and the idea is to smoke a few cigarettes really hard until you feel physically sick so your last memory of smoking is an unpleasant one.
